Bernanos movingly recounts the life of a young, shy, sickly priest who is assigned to his first parish in a small, rural community in northern France. The priest is ambitious and idealistic, but his plans are continually quashed by the local residents who mock him, misunderstand him, and ridicule his intentions. Yet, despite his ill treatment and struggle to maintain faith in the Lord, he continues his work, trying to find love for those around him, and even a state of grace.
